“African American Hair
Dos And Hair Styles

Let's discuss specific hair styles for African American women...

We'll discuss coloring tips, bonding and weaving tips, maintenance tips as well as some styling tips and styling "remix."

The one thing to remember when discussing hair treatment- coloring to be specific- is that dark brown and black hair is somewhat resistant to permanent coloring and bleaching which can be problematic for fragile, African American hair.

If you want to change your color by three or more shades in either direction (light or dark), it is best to have it done at a salon.

The best thing to do if you want to try an "at home" product is to do a strand test to get the timing right.

If you are looking for a change and don't want to test drive a new color, try an all-star style with one trip to the salon.

Weaves can make your favorite celebrity look doable with only a few hours of "torture."

The taboo about weaves is also LONG over.

We spoke to a stylist to the stars who has worked weave wonders for Mariah Carey, Trina, 3LW, and Kelly Price.

She explained that women can try hair extensions to boost volume, add length, play with some blazing hot hair hues or achieve a style that they really want.

One of the major bonuses about getting a weave is that you skip the chemical process.

There are many different types of weaves, but let's discuss one method of obtaining a weave- the art of bonding.

Many celebrities turn to hair extensions to prevent damage to their hair and to remove the styling pressure that comes along with multiple hair styles, day after day.

Bonding is a popular temporary weaving method and a great way to increase volume or add vibrant streaks of color to your natural hair.

     How is it done?

Well, tracks of hair are glued to the roots of your own hair with a special adhesive. Be cautious however, to prevent any damage to your own hair- do not leave the tracks in any longer than a week or two.

To remove the extensions, our celebrity stylist recommends soaking the hair with a bond remover or oil sheen for a few minutes to prevent damage to your natural hair follicles.

While changing your hair style every two weeks seems fun, it can become very costly- each track ranges from ten to fifteen dollars.

If you are considering a weave, follow these tips to ensure you are taking care of your hair.

You should always begin with good quality human hair. Choose tresses that match closely your own length, color and texture of hair.

Avoid synthetic hair as it can melt if styled with a blow dryer.

Maintain your hair with a detangling shampoo such as KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and use a moisturizing conditioner such as KeraCare Dry & Itchy Scalp Moisturizing Conditioner.

These will both work wonders towards your hair care needs.

When it finally comes time to removing the weave, do not attempt to take it out yourself. Seek out a professional to avoid unnecessary damage to your hair.

Also, you should visit your stylist to get the weave tightened to ensure your own hair is growing properly.

Lastly, before falling asleep you should cover your hair with a satin scarf.

What if you're the type of woman who just wants REGULAR maintenance tips- no color, no weaves, no nothing?

Well, I've got some great advice for you too!

For decades past we've always been told that grease is essential for our hair... but please, skip the grease.

All it does is sit on top of the hair and weigh it down. For moisture, use a product that penetrates right down to the cuticle to create monster shine.

Definitely wash your hair every three weeks. Use a gentle shampoo formulated to remove hair-dulling product buildup while also infusing moisture.

An inexpensive alternative is Aussie's Mega Shampoo and it can be found at most drug stores.

You may have an urge to over wash your hair, but don't. To remove the not-so-fresh feeling in between your shampoos, try a no-H2O-necessary shampoo like Klorane Oat Extract Dry Shampoo.

Just run a dime-sized amount through your hair and you will be left with fresh-smelling, clean strands.

Since you aren't washing your hair as often, you may notice your scalp will get a bit itchy. Please, resist the urge to scratch.

You can cut the skin which will invite in an assortment of bacteria.

Relieve the itch by swiping your scalp with an astringent-soaked cotton ball or pad.

If you are finding the time between washings long and you are constantly combating ho-hum hair, give it volume by braiding it into large sections at night.

In the morning, unbraid it, spray the roots with a flexible holding spray and finger-tousle your tresses.

Now that we've touched base on some color care tips and some basic weave tips, it's time for the style remix tip.

We have discovered a fun, new hairstyle that is easy-to-do, cute and totally fresh.

The style is the Senagalese twists.

What you do is part your hair horizontally from earlobe-to-earlobe for a center part.

Next, working back from your forehead, twist narrow sections of your hair flat against your scalp and pick up more strands as you move back (sort of like corn rowing).

At the end of each twist, pin at the horizontal section and leave the back wild and loose.

So, managing your unique hair type can be easy and fun- you just have to incorporate a little creativity (and a lot of bravery).
