“How To Pick The Right Hair Color

So, you want to color your hair?

Do you know how to start your journey to a beauty that is all your own?

Hair color sets the stage for your entire look, from makeup to fashion.

Hair color can be found in so many shades, how do you choose?

Before choosing a hair color and taking the plunge with it, you need to follow the basic "rule of color" to get the finished hair color you want.

To calculate the basic rule of color, do the following calculation:

Your natural hair color + the shade you choose = your new color (will be a combination of your natural color mixed with the color you apply.)

The color of your hair right now + a new color = your new finished color.

If this all sounds confusing, let me give you an example.

If you are now a medium-brown hair color, and you use a warm medium-red hair color, your new finished color will be a warm auburn shade.

     Makes sense right?

Once you have decided on a color, check back with your natural skin tones to see if the color you've chosen is a complimentary color.

The two natural skin tones are cool and warm.

We have provided you with guidelines here for each of the natural skin tones.

You are considered a cool toned woman if you have skin that is olive, rosy brown, fair or rosy and have eye-colors such as hazel, blue, blue-gray or green.

Cool skin tones are fortunate in that they are able to wear many exciting "unnatural" colors- lipstick reds, burgundies, and orchids, to achieve that new, sexy, daring look.

Cool skin tones should avoid gold, yellow, red and bronze tones as they have a tendency to make you look sallow and drawn.

You are a warm-toned woman if you have skin that is fair to medium golden, golden brown or darker and have eye-colors such as deep brown, hazel or brown.

Warm skin tones should go for a deep chocolate, rich golden brown, auburn, warm gold, red highlights, and golden blonde shades to enhance their "sunny" look.

The one thing you need to know about hair coloring is that you can't look at the front of a hair color box and think that's the color you will get- the picture only shows the color you are adding to the color ALREADY on your head.

A lot of hair colors will have a shade selector of some sort on the back of the box or on the bottom of the box.

     Locate your "starting color."

The chart will show you approximately what color you will get if you use that hair color. Another thing all women should be familiar with is the difference in hair coloring techniques. We have explained here the main types.

     Semi-Permanent Color

For those girls who aren't willing to kiss their natural tresses goodbye for life, there is a whole line of color that will give you a gentle boost of color.

Otherwise known as glazing, color stains or washes, this type can boost hair shine and texture.

This type of hair coloring is great for ladies looking to darken the hair and cover gray.

These rinses will help tame frizzies and will make your hair actually appear healthier.

     Permanent Color

If you're willing to go different and live with that color for awhile, try out a permanent color.

This type of hair coloring breaks down the hair cuticle and deposits pigment into the hair shaft.

Permanent color can lighten your hair by bleaching and depositing color in a one-step process.

This type will also cover grey more extensively.

It can be a total damage to your hair and long-term usage can result in permanent irreversible harm to your hair.

     Highlighting, Streaking, Weaving & Foiling

Highlights can be added to the hair by any of these methods listed above.

Any hair can take highlights and the hair is usually given some depth and more texture by this process.

Highlights can be added to one area or on the overall head of hair. Each look is uniquely different.

Highlights are a great first-time hair coloring technique as it only infuses a small amount of color.

It doesn't matter which way you decide to color your hair- if you follow the basic principles of hair color and stick to a color that matches your own skin tones, you'll come out looking great.
