“Are
Tanning Beds
Really That Dangerous?”
Tanning salons are big business these days. It's estimated
one million Americans a day visit over 18,000 of these establishments
as they try to get dark, sexy tan.
Unfortunately, there is nothing healthy about a dark tan.
It's actually a sign the skin has been damaged... and continual
tanning, especially in tanning beds, can develop melanoma- the most
dangerous type of skin cancer.
Even though many tanning salons promote tanning beds as "safe,"
the truth is the lamps release at least twice the amount of UVA
rays as the sun.
This means a 15-30 minute session under a tanning light equals
an entire day in the sun and a great deal of damage to the skin.
The fact of the matter is that tanning beds are provided to
give us great tans, but if used incorrectly, they can also be very
dangerous weapons of destruction.
Tanning beds have certain time limits
that must be strictly followed in order to secure your safety while
using. No bed is set for more than twenty minutes, and for a good
reason.
Too much time beneath these bulbs can result in serious damage,
not only to the skin and the organs inside your body, but your eyes
as well.
While you may not be aware of any damage to your body, prolonged
exposure to the light and heat from these bulbs is not good for
the body.
Tanning beds do actually 'burn' people up, as we so often
hear about.
When people expose their bodies to the heat and light from
these machines for long periods of time, the tanning beds in turn
act like a giant oven, which can ultimately 'cook' your insides.
Another thing that people do not follow strictly is the usage
of proper eye wear, though sanctioned by law.
The light from the bulbs is bad for the eyes, specifically
dangerous to the retina which can cause damage and premature blindness
in an otherwise healthy eye.
Overall, tanning beds ARE indeed dangerous... but, let's face
it: A nice even tan is attractive and sexy.
And in today's fast-paced environment, tanning beds offer
an easy solution to look great, FAST.
Ultimately, the decision is yours, and yours alone. I'm a
supporter of using "tanning alternatives" as much as possible
